The Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine is the site of the Battle of San Juan Del Monte in August 1896 wherein Katipunan forces under the command of Andres Bonifacio attempted to capture key sites in their uprising against the Spanish colonial regime, in particular targeting the Almacen de Polvora (a Spanish gunpowder depot) and El Deposito water reservoir that served Manila. After days of intense fighting, overwhelming Spanish forces prompted the Katipunan forces to withdraw into the eastern mountains along present day Rizal province.
While the revolutionaries did not win this specific encounter—facing superior Spanish weaponry—the event acted as the "spark" that ignited the Philippine Revolution across the provinces.
The Flame of Freedom: The park features an eternal flame, symbolizing the undying patriotism of the Katipuneros.
A Sanctuary in the City: Beyond its historical weight, the shrine serves as a vital green space for San Juan residents, blending leisure with reflection.
Located beneath the shrine's plaza, the Museo ng Katipunan offers an immersive, high-tech dive into the secret society. Unlike traditional museums that can feel static, this facility uses modern curation to tell a human story.

The Pinaglabanan complex bridges the gap between dusty history books and the present. It stands as a reminder that the freedoms Filipinos enjoy today were bought with the courage of "ordinary" people—farmers, laborers, and clerks—who decided that a life of dignity was worth the ultimate sacrifice.
Visiting these sites provides a necessary perspective: history isn't just about dates; it's about the collective will to change the course of a nation.
The NHCP operates the Museo ng Katipunan and the Museo El Deposito in the Shrine with the mission of educating our public in the historic events that occurred in this hallowed ground.
