Malacañan Palace is located along President Jose P. Laurel Street, which was formerly called Calzada de Malacañan—hence the name without a "g" in most Spanish publications at the time. Furthermore, the colonizers didn't have a terminal "ng" sound.
In 1954, former President Ramon Magsaysay issued an executive order changing "Malacañan Palace" to "Malacañang," which officially dropped "Palace" but added the letter "g." However, in 1986, former President Corazon Aquino ordered that the structure formally be named "Malacañan Palace" (without the "g") and the Office of the President as "Malacañang" (with a "g") for specificity.
Use the term Malacañan when referring to the Malacañan Palace or the president’s residence, and use the term Malacañang when referring to the whole Malacañang Complex.
